In honor of my newly resurrected Nintendo, here’s an early 8-bit cover of this Black Sabbath classic that I recorded in the Red House basement one cold, Washington winter day.

I would like to dedicate this one to Baxter and her expanding family, notably the newest member.

This is the sound coming off the actual NES itself (2 channels).
About the resurrected Nintendo – it just started going to a solid white screen on turn on, so I went the most popular route and bought a new 72-pin connector. That didn’t help, so I started seeking out a new NES. The one I ended up finding was in pretty bad cosmetic shape, so I yanked the circuit board out of it, and stuck it in the nicest case I had…which also already had the mods for 1/4″ out.
All this for a show I’ve got coming up on Friday 02 September for Atarimatt’s record release party – this is going to be an insanely rad show.

After too much delay, I got around to modding a Nintendo (graciously donated to science by DJ Dag-Nab-It) to output two independent channels of audio. The original NES is mono (one cable), and this mod has been described as a ‘stereo’ mod. What’s actually going on is a little bit cooler.
The NES can only make five sounds, 2 square wave tones, a triangle wave, a noise channel, and a very lo-fi sampler. From the chip inside the game system, the two square waves come off one pin, and the rest of the sounds off the next pin. That means you can hack in a couple jacks, run one channel (square waves) into one channel of a mixer, and run the rest into another…giving you hands on control of each track independently.
If you’ve ever heard me talk about mixers before, you might know that the mixer is probably my favorite instrument to play. So having such immediate, analog control over such raw, mathematical signal feels really good. This is the first time I fired up MIDINES with the MPC sequencer.
The second half of this track is a remix / rejiggle of Smile Transylvania’s excellent re-jAm / repurpose of a track from the Super Nintendo game Super Metroid.
We even made a video of what midines synthesises to the incoming midi messages.

Remix of my boy Ilya’s sound-design experiment “Doppler Beats”, which maybe I can encourage him to explain in detail in the comments?
He sent me this pretty awesome recording of some sounds, and I thought, these should be turned into a jam. I was also experimenting a lot with the ‘hardware’ sampler in Reason, so I used it as an excuse to get down and dirty like I hadna before. As such, buzz is pretty absent from this recording.

Remix of one of the first collaborations I recorded with a vocalist. One night in Brogdon I just put the headphones on and Buzz’d away on these recordings into the morning hours. Actually, I’m pretty sure that turned into a few nights. Once I got the basic structure down, I really wanted to tweak and refine it.
The original will be coming shortly, featuring Robsi on vocals. We really had a promising thing going with this band, and I hope you enjoy the more brit-pop side of tracker techno.

Believe it or not, this is the version of “Baby Alone” I played with Karl. He wanted a more dance / upbeat vibe to his shows so this seemed to fit that bill / rhythm very nicely. This one doesn’t actually contain any source material from the 96 tapes, while the others are built on sampled hits and phrases pretty heavily. This one was basically a Noggin track that got commissioned for duty with Karl.

It’s messed up, cause as much as I want this ‘category’ page to turn out like an album page, that would mean I would have to post the tracks in reverse order…since it sorts everything by date, newest first. Well I screwed that up with the first post for this EP by posting track 3 first.
Who cares though, here’s the fifth and final ATBKTD ‘remix’…which is really just a super-screwed version of another remix. It’s a nice chance to peak into harmonics that you might not have known were there, as they are suddenly brought down into the audible spectrum.
This one’s got em. In droves.

Finally, the heart of where all this madness stemmed from*. This is the first remix we decided to do to tape, which is basically me blindly flying through Jon’s live set up of ATBKTD. Jammed it out while recording, loved it, then found out we weren’t recording…we never engaged the knob to ‘record’…we only made it halfway to ‘play’. And since I had just magnetically erased the tracks (gnarly!), we didn’t hear anything (I guess we weren’t monitoring the tape either).
So yada yada you’ve already heard all this, we just quickly rewound the tape and went straight back to work.
Thanks again to my ATBKTD cats.

This is the most jammy remix of the bunch. Stays pretty true to the original, barring some manual tape speed changes. This one sees the drums kicking back on the bass.
Once again, recorded to 1/4″ tape from MPC1k through an LXP-1 reverb.

While it’s fresh, why don’t we go ahead and make this an ATBKTD week?
Here’s remix #3 which is definitely the furthest diversion from the original track. This is two guys on one MPC 1000 in a garage…that makes like 20 possible fingers on the pads + leaves room for someone to be constantly modifying the sequencer functions while recording.
This one was all laid down live, I don’t think any sequence actually got saved for this one.

Bill and Jon (Billijons, Bojillions, etc) recorded this killer track sometime last fall. Really came out of nowhere and knocked everyone down. I managed to get the tracks, and after much procrastination, finally finished some remixes due to a well timed txt-message. They could use some work in the mixing, but thats fine as I feel you really need to pass mixing and then mastering off to different people to really get a well-tuned production.
Major props to Jon on the production and Bill on the vox…absolutely incredible performance…I was sitting here with these loose ideas for a track, then I accidentally unmuted Bills vox track…suddenly the track started to make sense. Coincidentally enough, the vocal track I had was not used in their final version. You’ve aint never heard homedude hold notes for this long, sounds good.
This is part 3 from a 5 part remix-o-rama that runs the gamut from basic edits to total noise loop annihilation.
Thanks Bill and Jon for being awesomer.
