The above is one of these kickstarter fundraising webpages for my good friend Karl. I’d like to point out that, by pledging to support the project, you’re not just giving money away. Quite the opposite, you’re investing in the most unique and delicately-crafted, totally 100% hand made in America projects that exists right now. Karl has a subscription service called ‘Klaps’ (Kelp Lunacy Advanced Plagiarism Society), wherein he records the music, does the artwork, hand-sews a lot of the packaging, and then sends it out to those who have paid the dues. I’m not joking around here, folks…it’s not only some of the most creative and honest music you’ve ever heard, it’s an entirely personal experience from the artist to the fan. Not to mention, it’s almost made from totally recycled materials – and I don’t mean recycled like, thrown in the trash bin, picked out, sent to a plant, and turned into an egg carton – I mean that the packaging for the 96 album is made from a trash-bound record sleeve, reformed and screen printed into a cd case.
Here is a remix I did of the title track off Karl’s ’96’ record. He lent me his original 4 track and I just went to town throwing bits an pieces into the sampler.

Beatjuggling during a Pizza Party session.
The juggling is incredibly sloppy at the beginning but that’s kind of the point…Pizza Party is more about that spur of the moment gamespit, not calculated practice.
It’s our good buddy Herb Alpert and the TJB on the decks.

In honor of my newly resurrected Nintendo, here’s an early 8-bit cover of this Black Sabbath classic that I recorded in the Red House basement one cold, Washington winter day.

I would like to dedicate this one to Baxter and her expanding family, notably the newest member.

This is the sound coming off the actual NES itself (2 channels).
About the resurrected Nintendo – it just started going to a solid white screen on turn on, so I went the most popular route and bought a new 72-pin connector. That didn’t help, so I started seeking out a new NES. The one I ended up finding was in pretty bad cosmetic shape, so I yanked the circuit board out of it, and stuck it in the nicest case I had…which also already had the mods for 1/4″ out.
All this for a show I’ve got coming up on Friday 02 September for Atarimatt’s record release party – this is going to be an insanely rad show.

After too much delay, I got around to modding a Nintendo (graciously donated to science by DJ Dag-Nab-It) to output two independent channels of audio. The original NES is mono (one cable), and this mod has been described as a ‘stereo’ mod. What’s actually going on is a little bit cooler.
The NES can only make five sounds, 2 square wave tones, a triangle wave, a noise channel, and a very lo-fi sampler. From the chip inside the game system, the two square waves come off one pin, and the rest of the sounds off the next pin. That means you can hack in a couple jacks, run one channel (square waves) into one channel of a mixer, and run the rest into another…giving you hands on control of each track independently.
If you’ve ever heard me talk about mixers before, you might know that the mixer is probably my favorite instrument to play. So having such immediate, analog control over such raw, mathematical signal feels really good. This is the first time I fired up MIDINES with the MPC sequencer.
The second half of this track is a remix / rejiggle of Smile Transylvania’s excellent re-jAm / repurpose of a track from the Super Nintendo game Super Metroid.
We even made a video of what midines synthesises to the incoming midi messages.

My roommate at the time, Hilary Smith wrote a really great book called “Welcome to the Jungle”, and this was the soundtrack I made to a stop motion promotional video she had made for the book release. She had mentioned something about cutesy, so I imposed a 100% casio synthesizer policy to go with the animated pills popping and rolling around our basement fun / scary land. This all came about very quickly, but that’s something that’s nice about working professionally – deadlines.

This one grew out of a desire to roll tape, roll out reverb, and roll up… Kind of came out of nowhere, originally a beat I was working on for Karl, I believe, which likely might have been a beat I was originally working on in Oklahoma with Smile T. These things get mixed around sometimes in the heat of it all. If you don’t know the story by now, I recorded 4 tracks…two dry aux tracks and two reverb returns (stereo), only to find out that I didn’t really know how to use this new tape machine, and so only the reverb tracks got recorded. Still makes for some interesting listening.
Mpc + lxp1 -> tape.

Not having a good day.
This is an amen break on auto-repeat, spit forth from a schizophrenic mpc, fed through an auto-tune and then feeding back on itself with careful application of the aux knob. Not really POC style, but came from those same sessions, so they can claim it.

Alright let’s do this.
Wrapping up the RedHouseGreenHouse collaborations with an illbient-reggaecide-tone-swathing. Same as before, EPS + nylong guitar, and that’s it. The sequencer in the EPS is pretty fun to use, and really gets 80s on ya once you quantise.
Work with what ya got.
Blog about it.
