Probably the first piece I did to create backing tracks for Karl’s “96” record. I loved those crunchy drums, and took it upon myself to see if I could turn his voice into a bit of an electronic instrument via the power of digital sampling in the mpc.
I’ll never forget the first moments I was working on that vocal, Elena came over with Murphy and he just started singing along with Karl’s endless tone.
MURPH!!!

Ambient track produced from a couple George Strait samples on the EPS. Damn, that is a deep keyboard. Not even software samplers come close to what it could do with built in functionality.
Recorded to cassette tape in the early summer of ’10 in Anacortes, WA.
Thanks again, Karl.

This is another song written in 2009 very late at night in a very wet, very dark, mildly heated Anacortes upstairs room. Pretty sure I was up waiting for the meteor shower, or I had just come back from it. I think I wrote the majority of mawL on this same night.
Finally recorded last winter in the Sunnybrook garage.
Yer basic MPC-trip-tech-to-tape traversal.

Straight from the MS2000 faceplate to tape one evening in the red house. This ambient track is dedicated to the struggle inside all of us.

This is an homage track to the Pictures of Clouds releases, technically by Noggin. Shortly after the POC sessions, I still had the studio set up very POC-ish and so I got to work making some new tracks. This one came out of running the mpc into the mixer with a feedback channel set to my secret weapon.
This song has even been played live a couple times, once at the very mellow, very rainy DOS proto-ambient show, and once more shortly thereafter at Ike’s in Wimberley.
Shout out to Robby Neighbor.

Reeeeallly close to wrapping up the Pictures of Clouds release, but, as is the nature of the beast, it’s a bit of a nebulous thing. More tracks bearing the moniker are still to come, but for the most part, the set is complete and presentable.
This is the intro track that set the stage for what was to come, and also make us feel good about hitting the stop button on the tape player. You know, something is only finished when you deem it so, and it’s good to do that ever so often.

Finally getting a bit more ambient with what was intended to be an ambient project. This second song from the Pictures of Clouds sessions sort of rolled out immediately after the first couple jams. The tapedeck went like, pause,(pause),un-pause, and we got back into it. Once again rockin with the sequencers off. MPC and Ion + a young master + a young anacortian + myself.

One that fits the original ‘ambient’ vibe of the POC release a little closer.
This is basically track 3 off the album, not counting the intro track. We are just riding a vibe here, sequencer off, fx routed and fedback on each other, Elena chilling under the window.
Part of the magic of this short track is how it opens up for track 7, so you’ll have to burn this whole album to experience that proper-like.

This is one of the hits off the Pictures of Clouds release. All props to The Young Master on keys here, for one of the best, recorded, impromptu jams of my life.

The above is one of these kickstarter fundraising webpages for my good friend Karl. I’d like to point out that, by pledging to support the project, you’re not just giving money away. Quite the opposite, you’re investing in the most unique and delicately-crafted, totally 100% hand made in America projects that exists right now. Karl has a subscription service called ‘Klaps’ (Kelp Lunacy Advanced Plagiarism Society), wherein he records the music, does the artwork, hand-sews a lot of the packaging, and then sends it out to those who have paid the dues. I’m not joking around here, folks…it’s not only some of the most creative and honest music you’ve ever heard, it’s an entirely personal experience from the artist to the fan. Not to mention, it’s almost made from totally recycled materials – and I don’t mean recycled like, thrown in the trash bin, picked out, sent to a plant, and turned into an egg carton – I mean that the packaging for the 96 album is made from a trash-bound record sleeve, reformed and screen printed into a cd case.
Here is a remix I did of the title track off Karl’s ’96’ record. He lent me his original 4 track and I just went to town throwing bits an pieces into the sampler.
