Firmly rooted in the glitch aesthetic when this grew out. The product of cold nights in Eastern Europe and not wanting to take the tram to any social part of town.
Let me take this opportunity to remind myself that the bed I had in that room was the hugest thing I’ve ever seen – you couldn’t find sheets to fit it (our landlord was a furniture maker so all the furniture was totally custom). He was kind enough to leave a sweet boombox though with aux input so I was able to have a more decent monitoring situation and still pump out the hits.
Lots of melody and buffer stalling.

Yo Matt, some of these are more CLASSIC than TRASH, so please don’t take it the wrong the way ;].
Here’s another collaboration we did following in the square-wave melodic stylings of Mr. SOMA’s own work. I think I did the 808s on this one, and the vocals (found deep in the bowls of the internet). Of course I could be totally wrong about that, and honestly I think this was mostly homedude’s track, so all props to him.
Super happy tracker mellow style courtesy your jeskola buzz.

One of my most beloved creations…a true love song to the most badass, speaker destroying, analog/digital hybrid 1980s drum machine house master in your face (did I say drum machine) that has ever existed…the Roland TR-909.
Sure the 808 is trendy as all hell right now (your welcome America, the Dirty Third had plenty of those samples to go around), the 909 is the cream of crop, to me.
While the 808 is purely analog, kind of spaceship sounding, the 909 refined this sound, turned it up, compressed it, kept it analog, and brought in some digital crispness to just completely rip through a mix and/or your mids.
Seriously, my DJ mentor Edgar, in telling a tidbit from his incredible dj-lore, once explained to me that Carl Cox brought a 909 with him to a gig they threw, and literally, blew out all the mid range speakers in the venue.
Now, I’ve heard of subs blowing (I’ve blown my own), I never would have believed it (til I did it), but I’ve seen tweeters blown, but to blow the MIDS?! The snare drum on this piece is a straight killer.
Anyway, early on in my love affair with this device, I got hold of a vocoder plugin for Buzz, and just put down to bits what I was feeling inside.
The sounds this box makes never cease to floor me.

PS. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A REAL LIVE 909. If you would like to send a TR-909 to me, hit that contact button up above and you will have made a lifelong friend – I’ll even take you out for beer to make it a little more awesome.

pps. YES I did my radio show today, but I can’t let 909 pass unacknowledged, so I will upload the radio show, as usual, only tomorrow, instead of today.

Happy 09/09.

One of my earliest Buzz tracks – pretty basic experimentation with melody and the built-in Buzz synths. Some of the most ‘tracker-style’ stuff I ever did (cheesy).
These piano and string samples would find their way into many a production following this early experiment.

Unfinished track that has some nice guitar in it, not to mention my favorite Buzz machine, the Geonik’s PrimiFun.

This one comes up today cause I think my homeys Joel and Paul would approve of it (bust out the samplers?). It’s a short abortion, but it came pretty close to being turned into a Fade track (Robsi loved it and worked on vocals for like an afternoon).
It’s all Buzz and live record scratching…I was really tipping over the edge about to dive into turntablism when I produced this.

EDIT: track is fixed.
A Buzz classic. Playing with the dichotomy of distorted/cut up breaks against uber-melodic pure synthesis.
This was one of the first pieces I did with Buzz, and really probably where I first came to love the junglist amen freakery school of thought.

Album: Acoustic Translations
Date: 2008

When I moved back to Texas from California, Freddy and I went on a musical madness fest. We played every open mic, we jammed the far corners of BCS, we moved magnets and turned them into binary data. He really wanted to record a set of demos to hand out, and I wanted to help out. With the help of his acoustically beautiful (though not sound proof) jam room, and some nice matched mics, we recorded a good few hours worth of material he had just been wanting to get out for a while. This is one of my favorites. More to come, for sure.
Freddy if you can, leave the name of this piece in the comments.

Was seriously into glitchiness at the time I wrote this, but this one got some of the big beat and pop treatment too. This was a test on vsti’s as well.

I remember doing this one just out of love for 909’s and Rhodes pianos. I cannot recall exactly if I had this connected to some sort of knob box (all I had at the time were ones I had made), or if I just did it old school style and recorded each parameter tweak during each run through of the song.
Think I passed this one out quite a bit though on mix tapes, etc.
