Back in December, DJ Dag-Nab-It and I had the pleasure of being asked to provide the ambiance at a wedding here in town. The criteria was unique – keep it classy and make it feel like post-WWII.
Well we had a blast doing this one. Kind of a beautiful set up to the actual event as well – Dag-Nab-It scored some great records from Uncle “Smokey” Al Hanson (thanks Uncle Al), and I found the main record that was requested literally on the last dig I went on.
This weeks show includes hits from, but not limited to:
Herb Alpert
Henry Mancini
Ella Fitzgerald
Antonio Carlos Jobim
Various Pops groups
etc, etc…

A taste of things to come…
Anyway, I can’t believe I did it…the Trackaday project is officially ‘over’, but its not like I’m going to quit making music (I should totally rep my host, Dreamhost, without whom none of this would have been possible…absolute best web service provider out there). I thought for a little while about killing Noggin, taking real gory pictures and coming up with some elaborate tale and maybe an arch-enemy to take him out, but I didn’t want to alarm anyone who actually knows me as Noggin in my day to day life. I’ll honestly probably keep posting as regularly as I can, but I’ll save the awkward ‘Holy crap can i use yer internet in the next 15 minutes!?!’ cause I was about to forget to post stuff for another time. Not to mention, I’ve still got a backlog that just didn’t see the light yet.
Suffice it to say, I’ve got a totally new set of samples working their way to the mpc (I get a lot of mileage out of an APS file), with the exception of yer standard 808s, 909s, all samples from coming from wax.
Whipped up on the mpc one night after installing the eb16fx card. For the record (very proud of this), my MPC cannot be expanded anymore. Yes, I could add the F-Rom, but that only fits if you don’t have the eb16 card, so my mpc is maxed out as it can get.
The majority entirety of this is using samples off old disco / r&b / jazz records (Ronnie Milsap could nail some drums with his style of dx7-country). The fx card really just makes an appearance for a touch of reverb and I think eq. Don’t sleep on that non-destuctive chop in the 2kxl via velocity->sample start and 16-levels.

Title: Live from Stafford 20 December 2008
Artist: Bananahat
Album: Live from Bryan, TX
Date: 2008

When all three members of Bananahat happened to convene in Bryan, Texas around the Christmas of 08, good things happened. SkullF*cker had a show booked at Stafford, and along with Bryce Clayton Eiman, Bananahat was around to pull the electro-noise-house vibes out of the winter downtown air.
Technically, this was Bananahat plus, as we had two at-large members join us on stage in masks and stuff. There’s laptops, live vocals, a feedbacker modded-sp303, akai mpc, korg er-1, tuning forks, contact mics, more feedback loops, and most importantly the magic of the season and weariness of the road.
The actual performance was about 30 minutes, but the recordings got started a short ways into it. Major props to Houston for hitting that record button…I don’t know how I could ever remember much less describe Bananahat at their finest hour.
Chappy Chanukah to all yall.

Take note cause this is probably about as close as I’ll get to recording a Christmas track.
The other day while ripping the wonderful John Fahey Christmas record to computer, I started seeing what I could do with it using the mixer and a delayed (thanks soundcard latency!) version of the signal. These are the short snippets I managed to catch to tape, edited together audacity time-line style.
To clarify, these are live manipulations of the John Fahey record.
Merry Xmas.

Once again, giving yall two tracks today so nobody can blame for taking an ‘out’ on a technicality. I posted the demo version of this track earlier this year, and here is the first recorded version. I played this song at Stafford in December as part of the Skull-you-know-what-er show that I also had participated in the year before. Basically, every musician still in town took over this empty bar in a time when the crowds are gone and so we can dominate and do what we do how we do.
The base chords out of this track came from Buzz samples, the drums all MPC, and this version even includes some An1x for fun.
MPC via a Yamaha DMP-7 (LOVE that sound) mixer to the cd recorder at Stafford.
Chuck originally called this one “Walking home”.

This track isn’t exactly suited for playing out at a bar where everyone is drinking looking to get their groove on. However, one time I played a gig out in the forest of east Texas where I thought I might could pull this one off without being too crazy (thank you Birds and Beats). I came up with this extra bit of beat to add to it though to give it a bit of a special touch for the night.
Here is the live ‘remix’ played live earlier today. If you can, take yourself out to the forest with me and your close friends, real late at night on the hottest night of the year. Take yer shirt off, embrace the dirt, smile at the dichotomy of so many colored lights amidst so many darkened trees, veg out.
MPC (w/ FX card!) straight to Logic.

This is the first part of my set at Rancho Relaxo precluding an AMODA showcase. Highlights of this show include meeting Captain Sievert and Yatagarasu aka Hexcrusher. The Cap’n has the gameboys down, and Hexcrusher was rocking a Nintendo and a distortion pedal.
Love those guys.
Still noisy, albeit maybe a bit more focused than the encore that I’ve already posted.

When I moved back to Texas in 2008, having spent the previous year doing nothing but producing music (and doing lots of math in the process), I had sound exploding out of me. Ethan Master of the Hawaiian Ukulele, Steward of Rancho Relaxo, asked me to participate in a pre-AMODA “8-bit” show. Now, I’ve never considered myself strictly 8-bit, but I jumped at the opportunity to basically drone out in a dark basement and maybe make people expand their understanding of what things like 8-bit are really about. Recent experiments into feedback loops through the ER-1, music written for gameboy (had to meet the criteria), and a custom-built distortion box (think of it as analog 8-bit sound) all came together to produce a swath or digital crustiness reverberating off the graffiti’d stone walls of the Rancho Basement. The wonderful visuals provided by no less than three video artists of course helped the ambiance.
There are some re-worked Noggin classics in here, and part 1 will be up at some point.
This is Noggin doing noise, if that aint your thing, open your ears and mind or please, move on.
