Noggin – Round-Up (Backwoods Boys mix)

Artist: Noggin
Title: Round Up (Backwoods Boys remix)
Album: As Yet Unknown
Date: 2000
Part 1

After hiding all the barn animals in the ‘remix’ of Round-Up, I decided to just blast yall with where I was coming from, in a decidedly casio fashion.
Here’s the ‘original mix’ which came as a remix the day after the original release of Round-Up.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the Phase album (my first CD – not first album) is complete. This is the first track which I intended to pretty much set the stage for how I felt about the state of music at the time. In highschool, kids were so caught up in ‘techno’ being ‘video game music’ and ‘fake’ and blah blah ignorant ignorant drivel. I wanted this track to make all those @$$holes feel like they were totally right.
The song title is a direct homage to an absolute CLASSIC Buzz track by Low Occurence, titled ‘How to kill the cliche’.

Cruisin along the edge of the cheese escarpment, I bring to you a pretty Buzz-standard trackerised happy song. Well its not so much ‘happy’ song as it is ‘content song’.
It was originally called ‘newbassfix’ which kind of reminds me that I was experimenting a lot with bass around this time (thanks new sub). Not sure what’s new about it, but there you go.
It’s all buzz. Just being bored in my dorm.

Another personal favorite here, Noggin takes it a bit deep and minimal after a decidedly idm intro.
First time I ever though, ‘dang samples are basically just like synths when treated correctly’ (an early misconception most electronic music producers might share), and first time I was like, damn, thats deep. I remember finishing this amidst a crappy summer school session at Blinn, and totally finding relief and escape and belonging in tracks like this.

Starting to wrap up the ‘Phase’ album, here is probably my favorite track from those sessions. Inspired by classic Faithless, this is sort an epic euro-house ballad. Vintage tracker samples render the melodies a little dirty.

Title: Baby Alone (Nog Jam)
Artist: Noggin + Karl Blau
Album: 96 Nog Jams
Date: 2010

Believe it or not, this is the version of “Baby Alone” I played with Karl. He wanted a more dance / upbeat vibe to his shows so this seemed to fit that bill / rhythm very nicely. This one doesn’t actually contain any source material from the 96 tapes, while the others are built on sampled hits and phrases pretty heavily. This one was basically a Noggin track that got commissioned for duty with Karl.

Here’s one I played a lot with my homey Karl. We would generally open with this one, the lyrics being nothing but a well timed, big smile from both of us. Worked as a pretty good dirty jam to just get the crowd funked up enough to know where things were heading. This is an early demo I made of this running through a bit of rack fx courtesy the studio quad. This one is labeled Pictures of Clouds cause that’s the tape it came from.
I walked outside yesterday and Mr. Blau was right there. Good times!

Here is a mix I did for Chandler while I was working as a DJ at Club Tulip. It’s a pretty pure dance set with lots of vocals.
Mixed with one turntable in DJ decks on a Vestax PMC 05.
This mix includes hits from, but not limited to:
Reflekt
Depeche Mode
Aaliyah
Utah Saints
Benjamin Diamond
etc, etc…

Title: On Looking Live Score
Artist: Bananahat
Album: Live at Terman Engineering
Date: 2008

After successful recording sessions and promises of international touring, Bananahat regrouped for their first live work. We were commissioned to provide a live score for part of a modern dance act who were doing the finale of their dance suite in the fountain at Terman Engineering building.
Boy did we piss the cops off with this one. Besides the dronetones and feedback at high volumes, we actually had permission to be making said noises, and the authorities couldn’t do much but let us go on and try to enjoy it.
We practiced a few times, felt really good about it, and then did the show in late May.
This recording is missing a few things, namely the entire first movement, all the signal that Max was making (running a couple underwater mics [read: good mics in condoms], and some pvc tube contact stuff), and of course the general atmosphere of the whole event. It worked really well. The three of us really tuned into the dancers and they really fed off of the speakers as well.
It starts out with the part where the dancers started stripping off clothing, then moves into more ambient, watery territory, and it’s awesome in headphones (god bless you Cobi), then stick around for the drone at the end. We had it timed with the fountains and everything. A+ drone fool.
Big thanks to Cobi for organising this, and to both her and Max for being in this thing with me.
Really appreciate all the comments, as always.

Saturday track. Get your party on.
Before I say anything else about this track, let me say THANK YOU!!! to all of you who are following or at least checking this project. The response has been overwhelming, positive, and very surprising! This project is for yall and I’m just happy to know I’m making people get all touchy feely with themselves (ok maybe I just hope that).
This track is in honor of a great inside joke we had today while sorting 1000’s of dusty old moldy ass records up at the radio station. We came in with high-hopes of categorisation, but then realised pretty quickly to throw those out the window as Eric Clapton got sorted into the very fledgling Blues category.
Here’s an Eric Clapton remix done in Buzz. This one was for the sorority girls. Ok and the frat boys. But don’t even hate, yall all will jam it.
