All over the place show today. Seems like the morning darkness hung around a little longer than it usually does, but we do manage to pep it up here and there. More classical fare care of the opera ‘Lakme’.

DNTEL

Pretty psyche-mellow show today with a nod to the indie tip. Some mixing works it’s way in so things stay fresh. Feels weird having these extra 15 minutes – almost threw me off but we persevered.
Oh yea and dig David Suzuki keeping it real on the mashup.

Tonight’s show is something I’ve always wanted to do – super deep, dank house with a nod to the melodic side. It felt real good to pull this one off. Seriously IDM at times, pretty straight up house at others. Even includes vocals for the pop kids.

The first ~half of the show, I played a recording from a recent live show I jumped in on at Revolution in Bryan, TX. The recording came out good, and it’s a succinct snapshot of where I’m at right now, especially in terms of MPC production. Anyway, more on that later when I post it up.
So I only recorded the second half of the show when I got back to normal DJing…this evening with all CDs (what a concept!).
Kept it more on the mellow and the glitchy tip, if yer into that sort of thing.

I had so much fun making this. First use of the 8-outs on the mpc, and really some of the most down and dirty I ever got with that machine. Roland MC-09 on the acid, some protools and UA reverb in there I believe – lots of UA compressors etc (what Up Jonathan hook it up with the box homey!!).
I have a connection with Blue Herons that I cannot explain. I first noticed this in 2008 when I confronted one waiting outside my apartment. Ever since then, I can’t help but feel like they are somehow watching my back when I least expect it. Maybe they are relatives reincarnated, or simply messengers sent from the other side. Either way, this one’s for the birds.

It’s not too early in the week to party, right?
This one grew out of proposition to ‘dj’, indirectly, again, a Halloween party happening in Waco. I prepared the mix beforehand, then Jared and I headed to Waco to meet my sister at Georges, head to a party near campus, get kicked off the doorsteps of the girls dorm, then finally head down to Houston I believe for an a capella band concert?! Hell of a time.
This one is very college-coed friendly with the hits and some 80s and some Hip Hop and some Noggin remixes / edits to spice it up.
This track includes hits from, but not limited to:
Genesis
Eminem
New Order
Miss Kittin and the Hacker
INXS

Another one off the recently bounced Fall Tape. This path was formed by placing one stone at a time.
EPS sampling Logic sounds, sequenced via mpc, sequence recorded to logic, re-sequenced back to eps, tracked to logic in whole song and chunk sections (for looping), sent to cassette tape, bounced back to pc, cut up / mastered briefly mostly to raise cassette output, disseminated on the trackaday faces.
I love the interplay of different machines from different time periods because it brings up interesting techniques that might not have been explored otherwise. Ever notice a hardware samplist’s tendency to raise both notes of a interval equally? That’s the machine talking as much as the musician (this led to a lot of ‘jazzy’ hip hop and electro-lounge).
TX on the bass.

This piece is a combination of two other pieces of algorithmic music written in 3 lines each of chuck code – deemed ‘chuckus’ for their relationship to 3 line poem styles. My first homework assignment when I came back to school after a trip back home in 2008.
The first piece can be summed up as cancerous, as follows:
SndBuf a=>dac;"special:dope"=>a.read;SndBuf b=>dac;"special:peksblnk"=>b.read;
float c;float d;while(true){Math.cos((c::ms=>now)/15::ms)=>a.rate;
Math.tan((d::ms=>now)/11::ms)=>b.rate;Math.sin(1333)=>c;Math.sin(-400)=>d;}

The second piece can be summed up as lament, as follows:
SinOsc q=>NRev r=>dac;SqrOsc w=>r;[63,61,56,65,60]@=>int x[];.5=>q.gain;303=>int
m;0=>float e=>w.gain;while(m::ms=>now){if(e<.1)e+.0003=>e=>w.gain;maybe*m::ms=>
now;Std.mtof(x[Std.rand2(0,4)])=>q.freq;Std.mtof(x[Std.rand2(0,4)]+5)=>w.freq;}

Again, these are algorithmic pieces, and so they kind of write themselves. Each time they are played, they will be slightly different. The challenge for me was to still give them a consistent enough character that ties them together on multiple plays. Also, using simple math functions to simulate ‘song structure’ puts forth its own challenges.
These two pieces also definitely represent the place my head and heart were at in January of 2008. We miss you, Mom.
