Title: On Looking Live Score
Artist: Bananahat
Album: Live at Terman Engineering
Date: 2008

After successful recording sessions and promises of international touring, Bananahat regrouped for their first live work. We were commissioned to provide a live score for part of a modern dance act who were doing the finale of their dance suite in the fountain at Terman Engineering building.
Boy did we piss the cops off with this one. Besides the dronetones and feedback at high volumes, we actually had permission to be making said noises, and the authorities couldn’t do much but let us go on and try to enjoy it.
We practiced a few times, felt really good about it, and then did the show in late May.
This recording is missing a few things, namely the entire first movement, all the signal that Max was making (running a couple underwater mics [read: good mics in condoms], and some pvc tube contact stuff), and of course the general atmosphere of the whole event. It worked really well. The three of us really tuned into the dancers and they really fed off of the speakers as well.
It starts out with the part where the dancers started stripping off clothing, then moves into more ambient, watery territory, and it’s awesome in headphones (god bless you Cobi), then stick around for the drone at the end. We had it timed with the fountains and everything. A+ drone fool.
Big thanks to Cobi for organising this, and to both her and Max for being in this thing with me.
Really appreciate all the comments, as always.

Title: FH
Artist: Megaspore Mothercell / Nueget
Album: Nueget Jams
Date: 1995

Ok we’re getting real old school now. This was one of the first recording session / jams with my first band, at the time called Megaspore Mothercell. We would later change our name to Nueget. We went through a number of bassists, but the band pretty much was held down by Steve and myself. I was eventually fired (only time that’s ever happened), which is a funny story you’ll have to hear later.
Anyway, Steve had written and wrote a lot of the songs, but we jammed em up. Later on, we would all pretty much share the songwriting, which, being a (unbeknownst to us) noise rock jam band, meant making lots of noise and making sure somebody remembered what it was we did.
This one has David on bass.

Was seriously into glitchiness at the time I wrote this, but this one got some of the big beat and pop treatment too. This was a test on vsti’s as well.
Buzz.

Dig on that sidechain.
Speaking of Cobi, I feel a Bananahat post coming on soon…can you handle that?

Album: Beretta Underground 002
Date: 2002

Made during my mixtape-madness days…this one served as the introduction to my second public mix, Beretta Underground 002. It’s basically a beat constructed in the classic 90s hip hop style (Moody Blues on the sample yall), with a heavily edited Mobb Deep a capella dropped back on top. Oh yea and a glitched out Bruce Willis a capella from 12 Monkeys….maybe one of the last appearances of a movie sample in my work.
This is still one of my proudest mixtapes, real deep real good hip hop.

Had a good time this am. Got there early! I’m still loving this Larry Joe Taylor guy so you get to enjoy him some more. I’m doing the country show again tomorrow, so if you are into that, it’ll be up here tomorrow.
ps. NERD ALERT: I always thought these files sounded…’phasey’ (very technical term). Anyway, turns out that one of the channels (left or right) is wired up backwards, and that’s making the recordings sound ‘thin’, ‘washed out’, ‘phasey’…I was able to fix it for the second hour, and I will try to fix these from now on, until I can get the station engineers to re-wire the record output.
This weeks show includes hits from, but not limited to:
Kid606
Chris Catalena
Erykah Badu
Bonnie Rait
Average White Band
etc, etc…

Request Thursday in full effect (if you’ve never made a request before GET AT ME! You don’t have to know what you want, just give me an idea let’s freestyle together!).
When I moved to San Marcos in 2000 I left a radio show I had been doing for 2 or 3 years to my cohost DJ Fro and his new cohost Big Dookie (no that’s not what he called himself then but it is what we call him now). Wanting to play live again, and also visit the show I had so lovingly nurtured, we set up this in studio performance one Wednesday night during thanksgiving or christmas or something while were all back in town.
In the studio we had Fro, Dred, PolyPatrick, JoMoNo, Big Dookie, myself, and I know Mike was there finishing up most of the time. We had a great time just trying to get the sampler all hooked into the board and also synced with my backing cd of hihats…don’t hate yall I was working with very limited technology and 16 total samples was just not enough to play this track so I had to put them on a cd and then play drums, keys, strings, and samples over that. So yea, this is for the most part live. Yes there is a blatant Underworld sample I figured I’d do something I couldn’t legally do on record live.
Huge thanks to Fro for engineering this whole thing, and it’s funny because this definitely is an early instance of almost every conversation I have with a sound guy these days.

I remember doing this one just out of love for 909’s and Rhodes pianos. I cannot recall exactly if I had this connected to some sort of knob box (all I had at the time were ones I had made), or if I just did it old school style and recorded each parameter tweak during each run through of the song.
Think I passed this one out quite a bit though on mix tapes, etc.

GaGeAsSeBr – Krypton

Title: Krypton
Artist: GaGeAsSeBr
Album: GaGeAsSeBr
Date: 2001

Here’s another bit of a concept album I did right out of high school, if not mostly while still in high school. When I was in middle school, I thought the periodic table was mostly good for finding hidden words amongst the abbreviations. GaGeAsSeBr (Gah-Gee-Ass-Ee-Bur) is about the best you can do though. David and I laughed about this for a good year… we had a knack for talking nonsense.
Anyway once I started making music, I guess this was the first ‘concept album’ I wanted to do. The idea was to be completely off the wall, and also VERY sampler friendly. My sampler at the time was an Akai S-20, with a good amount of memory (17mb), but a horrible storage method (floppies…many of my tracks were spread across 3 to 4 floppies and loading time was absolutely atrocious). So this project grew out of me wanting to make somewhat daft, somewhat jamming loops, and be able to create entire improvised tracks around these loops (no more than 16, either).
Looking back, this is one of the first occurrences of restrictions pushing my creativity…it’s sometimes good to have limits to your ability, or deadlines, or other restrictions because it makes you work more with the goal in mind, and not so much the process. I recall that once I started tracking these things out, they just started flowing and I think I did the first three in the first day.
So, here’s the first installment of the GaGeAsSeBr posts which I’m going to do backwards so it shows up in correct order when you later come look at the EP page.
This first one, ‘Krypton’, you’ll notice isn’t even in the GaGeAsSeBr paradigm…that’s because I also had a penchant for secret tracks. This is the secret track. And pay attention, I totally ripped myself off later by pulling the best part of this track out and using it with Rik in the previous, ‘Robofish / Guitar’.
Enjoy.
