Shout out to my buddy Lyman on this one. At the time, one of the only people I actually knew who was producing electronic music in Central Texas in 2000. Think about how for granted we all take ‘producers’ these days – every dude with a computer and awareness of beatport is an ‘edm producer’ nowadays. We didn’t call it edm, we called it ‘techno’, not because it was accurate but because it was a perfectly good term and nobody cared and I’m kind of bitter that people keep trying to come up with a ‘better’ term.
Plus, if anything, this is IDM (the most loaded genre-term in the history of pretentiousness).
I really put a lot into this, from recording raw material, editing the sh*t out of said raw material, dropping it into buzz, and coming to terms with multi-band compression for the mastering that followed production.

I mean I really went crazy with Buzz…I have to admit that the high amount of output when that was my main (only) production tool is part of the reason I started this whole blog.
This is me trying out synths a lot more, well trying to tweak them to what I wanted at least KNOWING a little about what I was tweaking was doing.
Its psy, its acid, its breaks, big beat, whatever you want to call it. Got a bit of mid-career Orbital energy in it (a constant inspiration).

Soaring, melodic, sophomoric, string-breaks. This is all Jeskola Buzz from when I was just starting out with this more electronic production. I felt real classy I after I spit this one out at 16. At 9 minutes long, this was an early epic.
Diggin on the primi-fun and the newfound favorite (at the time), Whitenoise’s Delta. Glide function on a synthesizer WOW.

Here’s some very Noggin-in-college, hifi Buuzage in a trip hop stylee. Listening back to this, I actually realise it came out right when I was getting into really being able to wield Buzz well, and put a lot of different technique into it.
I dare you to spot the Backstreet Boys sample.
Come and get me.

This one was all about the drums and breaking out of any sort of genre that might have tried to encapsulate me in 2002. Its heavy on the melody and heavy on the bit of bounce. Its weird and its funky and damn I like it more now than I even did then, I think. Also managed to pull every tracker technique out the book on this one.
dig it.
Shout out to Arguru.

Once again, giving yall two tracks today so nobody can blame for taking an ‘out’ on a technicality. I posted the demo version of this track earlier this year, and here is the first recorded version. I played this song at Stafford in December as part of the Skull-you-know-what-er show that I also had participated in the year before. Basically, every musician still in town took over this empty bar in a time when the crowds are gone and so we can dominate and do what we do how we do.
The base chords out of this track came from Buzz samples, the drums all MPC, and this version even includes some An1x for fun.
MPC via a Yamaha DMP-7 (LOVE that sound) mixer to the cd recorder at Stafford.
Chuck originally called this one “Walking home”.

Named from a sampler naming mishap, I present to you another one of the oldest songs off this record. This was written in Anacortes in the fall around the same time as “Thumb”. It also contains rare samples created from even older buzz files. Performed live a couple times, and jammed to.
Then while recording, this really sweet groove opened up.
MPC straight to 1/4″ reels via Mackie mixer and LXP-1 on send.

This track isn’t exactly suited for playing out at a bar where everyone is drinking looking to get their groove on. However, one time I played a gig out in the forest of east Texas where I thought I might could pull this one off without being too crazy (thank you Birds and Beats). I came up with this extra bit of beat to add to it though to give it a bit of a special touch for the night.
Here is the live ‘remix’ played live earlier today. If you can, take yourself out to the forest with me and your close friends, real late at night on the hottest night of the year. Take yer shirt off, embrace the dirt, smile at the dichotomy of so many colored lights amidst so many darkened trees, veg out.
MPC (w/ FX card!) straight to Logic.

Maybe you heard, but I have no idea how I recorded the original version of this that ended up on Reverb City and Sober October. So in an attempt to recreate it, I jammed this out one night.
It’s obvious a lot cleaner, but I think I still like something about that uber-washed out reverb-only version.
