More midweek chill (thanks Keith).
My friends at SWT and I used to drive around the hill country a lot. Many evenings and setting suns spent sailing the serpentine spine of the Devil’s Backbone.
This might be an un-naturally skewed chill representation of that time of life, but it was definitely developed in the darkness following one of said drives.
This is all Buzz and also includes guitar (I did get really into that I had forgotten).

Once again, giving yall two tracks today so nobody can blame for taking an ‘out’ on a technicality. I posted the demo version of this track earlier this year, and here is the first recorded version. I played this song at Stafford in December as part of the Skull-you-know-what-er show that I also had participated in the year before. Basically, every musician still in town took over this empty bar in a time when the crowds are gone and so we can dominate and do what we do how we do.
The base chords out of this track came from Buzz samples, the drums all MPC, and this version even includes some An1x for fun.
MPC via a Yamaha DMP-7 (LOVE that sound) mixer to the cd recorder at Stafford.
Chuck originally called this one “Walking home”.

Noggin – Round Up (Dosie Do mix)

Artist: Noggin
Title: Round Up (Dosie-Do mix)

Part 1

This track was originally released 11 years ago today.
ScottyP and myself had been wanting to do a collaboration, and I got this about halfway there when I sent it to him for his side of the story. I can’t remember what his exact reaction was, but it was like, ‘I’m not touching that with a ten foot pole’. Let’s just say I took this one to the edge and then tossed the corpse over with a string tied to it and my own ankle.
If you like your house dark, slamming, and garage style, you’ll dig this.
And do stick around for the breakdown courtesy of some Carolina folk down on Cripple Creek.

Glitchtacular melodiousism rampant right here.
It’s hi-fi buzzage, with a definite downtempo tip. The beat out of this one went on to bigger and better things…and it’s just on the tip of my tongue right now what those things were.
originally called ‘gichee.bmx’.

Firmly rooted in the glitch aesthetic when this grew out. The product of cold nights in Eastern Europe and not wanting to take the tram to any social part of town.
Let me take this opportunity to remind myself that the bed I had in that room was the hugest thing I’ve ever seen – you couldn’t find sheets to fit it (our landlord was a furniture maker so all the furniture was totally custom). He was kind enough to leave a sweet boombox though with aux input so I was able to have a more decent monitoring situation and still pump out the hits.
Lots of melody and buffer stalling.

Here’s yet another example of vision quest via buzz tunage. Pretty much knew exactly where this one was gonna go when it came out. I remember this coming from really appreciating the sunshine while walking up to jck. Kind of idm-proto-house, longing for an emu sampler.
A classic favorite.

Fast paced jungle + some drum n bass originally intended to be set to an acapella of Eminem. That’s one of my favorite tracks off that album. This one is entirely buzz tracker junglism.
Borderline drill-n-bass but not enough rolls, I suppose.

This was the ‘secret track’ off of Phase, my first cd. Mellow and kind of leaves you with no closure, like a good secret track should do.

Another personal favorite here, Noggin takes it a bit deep and minimal after a decidedly idm intro.
First time I ever though, ‘dang samples are basically just like synths when treated correctly’ (an early misconception most electronic music producers might share), and first time I was like, damn, thats deep. I remember finishing this amidst a crappy summer school session at Blinn, and totally finding relief and escape and belonging in tracks like this.

Another one of these consciously trying to be hi-fi tracks right here from the glitch haydays.
All buzz as usual. Serious sine drops. Dynamics. Tone Loc!
