After too much delay, I got around to modding a Nintendo (graciously donated to science by DJ Dag-Nab-It) to output two independent channels of audio. The original NES is mono (one cable), and this mod has been described as a ‘stereo’ mod. What’s actually going on is a little bit cooler.
The NES can only make five sounds, 2 square wave tones, a triangle wave, a noise channel, and a very lo-fi sampler. From the chip inside the game system, the two square waves come off one pin, and the rest of the sounds off the next pin. That means you can hack in a couple jacks, run one channel (square waves) into one channel of a mixer, and run the rest into another…giving you hands on control of each track independently.
If you’ve ever heard me talk about mixers before, you might know that the mixer is probably my favorite instrument to play. So having such immediate, analog control over such raw, mathematical signal feels really good. This is the first time I fired up MIDINES with the MPC sequencer.
The second half of this track is a remix / rejiggle of Smile Transylvania’s excellent re-jAm / repurpose of a track from the Super Nintendo game Super Metroid.
We even made a video of what midines synthesises to the incoming midi messages.

Live version of the first track I ever wrote for Nintendo via midiNES. I have to give huge major props to Kyle in Anacortes for recording this show. This is literally the first time I had ever played the Nintendo outside of my basement, only about a day or two after finally modifying the NES for 1/4″ output. The mixer at open mic at Johnny Picasso’s (great times!) luckily had some reverb built in so we get a bit of the cave effect.
Second half is an homage to Smile Transylvania / Super Metroid / Jeremy / Bill / Freddy because those guys turned me on to that riff, and I always love watching them play their version and their subsequent songs inspired by said riff.

100% Nintendo Entertainment System – 1980’s model NES running MidiNes.
Thank you Dj Dag-Nab-It for the Nintendo to experiment on and modify. This was the first live jam I made using the NES as the sole sound source. Hooked up to the MPC sequencer, it’s one of my favorite synths to work with.
This track was recorded live…actually the first time I ever brought the nintendo out for a gig. A friend of mine, Kyle, ran the open mic at Johnny Picasso’s in Anacortes, and to him I say Thank You for making this recording. I also have to give him much props for dealing with my unpredictable setup, hot signals, and requests for more and more reverb.
