Title: Broken Fences
Artist: Trypset and Noggin
Album: Trypnog
Date: 2012

This is a track Trypset and I jammed out one February night, which I subsequently re-tracked, bounced to tape, yadda yadda yadda, named, and uploaded.
The name of this track comes from a couple inspirations:
– DJ Broken Fences is a name I always saw in San Marcos, and maybe the best DJ name I’ve ever heard (Trypset is a SM native)
– the recently mended broken fence in my back yard (yard party 2012 is on yall)
– sounds good, man
Alternate title is ‘The Ballad of Broken Fences’.
This is a mellow, trip hop, illbient, blunted style courtesy the mpc2000xl and some korg synth engine.
Recorded in Bryan, TX, Feb 2012.

Call this the ‘demo’ for the final ‘Orkas’ that just about tops out the album.
This one is not too dissimilar, but was definitely recorded about a month earlier than the version which eventually made the cut, and is completely unedited (the final version was actually recorded backwards, and then sections swapped after the fact). It’s still gonna be markedly different because I tend to record things ‘live’ vs setting up sequences in advance, so they definitely will take different paths to get to the same place.

Great! My plan worked perfectly according to …. plan(?).
Here we are on a Thursday (collab days) and the track we come to is pretty heavily collaborated on. I posted this track earlier this year, so yes, get ready for a bonus track today to quell any chances of haterism from the naysayers out there.
Jon played some guitar and I played some ER1 and we turned the gain to the tape reels up really high. Then I got crazy with the scissors tool and the spectral plugins in Logic.
This is the weirdest one.
MPC straight to 1/4″ reels via Mackie mixer and LXP-1 on send.
Chuck originally called this one “Untitled”.

Here is the longest track from the album at ~12 minutes. It’s a 2 part piece that I wrote pretty much entirely on Orcas Island in the North-West islands of Washington State.
While there, I came across a tiny, cheap casio keyboard in the closet where we were staying. The keyboard barely worked – it was stuck on one preset that was like a hybrid organ / piano / vox thing, and then drums. If you hadn’t noticed, I love working with restrictions so I fired up the sampler and pulled about the 4 or 5 sounds this thing could make, and set to working digitally dicing them with the rudimentary functions of the mpc to create entire instrument sets.
From those sets of sounds, these two, very related tracks sprang forth. Again with the further refinement and couple of garage sessions, and the finished piece was put to tape. Every sound from that crappy old broken keyboard found in a closet. Work with what you got.

Let’s just go ahead and wrap this up.
Here is one more track from the POC sessions that I kind of recorded on a whim while trying out an auto-tune feeding back on itself.
I’m hesitant to attach this one to the POC releases, but it definitely came from those sessions. Consider it a super secret track that you might find branded as POC, Noggin, or whatever else.
A favorite. (and a throwback to tuesdays post ;]).

A more pop take on last weeks drunkard of a beat.
Made for the same project, at about the same time, with about the same equipment. ER-1 still bleeping away, but now some softsynth epiano and the 808 has gone -> 909 / sampled drum machine.

Sound of a drunk synthesizer.
Also from the TreeVerb by Spratt demos. I threw this one together with the mpc and er-1 on bleep mode just to get something with some pure tones going so you could hopefully get a clearer picture of the reverb effects. TreeVerb was designed to generate impulse responses that were made up of a virtual ‘forest’ of trees. Some unique properties came out of this in unnatural configurations, notably placing the trees in a spiral.

Yea that’s an ESQ-1 tone. Not really effected either, minus of course the insanely compressed reverb.
Originally did this to give to a friend, who never did it anything with it, so it gets named after her. ;] One of my favorites.

My favorite track from these sessions, and pretty much the reason why I decided to keep these reverb tracks that I unintentionally recorded.

Jon and I laid this down in his apartment using two mics. It’s all improv, and actually the first time we had hung out together in a while when we recorded this. What can I say the air was alive. This is to be included on the yet forthcoming Halloween tape.
