I’m calling this style Final Fantasy Epic Breakbeat Growliness.
Named after a prof I had in school who I just didn’t get along with at all. Somehow, this piece grew to be over 10 minutes long. Heavy breaks and lots of growling synths.
Not really a Wednesday track, but I’m trying to get it so December (the last month!!!) is just killers every day.
All Buzz.

Here is the longest track from the album at ~12 minutes. It’s a 2 part piece that I wrote pretty much entirely on Orcas Island in the North-West islands of Washington State.
While there, I came across a tiny, cheap casio keyboard in the closet where we were staying. The keyboard barely worked – it was stuck on one preset that was like a hybrid organ / piano / vox thing, and then drums. If you hadn’t noticed, I love working with restrictions so I fired up the sampler and pulled about the 4 or 5 sounds this thing could make, and set to working digitally dicing them with the rudimentary functions of the mpc to create entire instrument sets.
From those sets of sounds, these two, very related tracks sprang forth. Again with the further refinement and couple of garage sessions, and the finished piece was put to tape. Every sound from that crappy old broken keyboard found in a closet. Work with what you got.
MPC straight to 1/4″ reels via Mackie mixer and LXP-1 on send.

Date: 2000

This track really kicked off my trip-hop obsession in a big way. For this track, and a whole slew of tracks after it, I really wanted that hard hitting, smeared drum sound. Also really got into incorporating outside elements into tracks at this point…some of the first guitar-infused Buzz-ness right here.
Chew a bit on this one folks, it’s easy to swallow.
Unrelated note, really looking forward to Noel Gallagher’s solo album in October.

From conception to completion to concrete realisation on 02 February 2002. One of my Sugs down in the Beretta Basement commissioned me to make this as we were heading to a party of epic proportions later that evening in Austin. We needed jams, and I was obliged to dj in advance what turned out to be 300 or so people diving for seventy-two 40’s at midnight while the theme from 2001 blared (my props to the other djs for that).
It’s hip hop. It’s party ish. It’s got the Bia Bia remix that stands to this day as my favorite foray into drum n bass.

What can I say, I’m a sucker for a request.
This is from a pretty fruitful collaboration with one Andy, aka Gabriel Winter. We met up via Buzz, and decided to start working together on some pretty epic buzz tunes. Gabe’s insane melodic sense and my don’t-know-what-I’m-doing programming and I think we had a pretty good thing going.
This one was our first collaboration, and we went back and forth with this one pretty crazy. I can’t remember if Gabe was in Dallas or Colorado. Working with Gabriel Winter taught me a lot and humbled me in ways I needed to be humbled. He was an outstanding musician and one of the most positive people I had ever met.
Gabe if yer out there drop me a line!

Release Date: 1999

Request Thursday! I must say thank you to all the new requests, and the new requestees, but do hold your horses as I had a couple in mind already and the key here is patience (aka dragging it out). Do keep those the requests and comments flowing. We’ve a long way to go yet.
I was very proud of this song when I produced it. It covered a few styles cleanly, and at least didn’t sound as much like ‘tracker music’ as I was thinking all my stuff did (in hindsight, my stuff rarely sounded like ‘tracker music’). I wrote this around the time of some great eclipse happening in Europe, and I really wanted to be there experiencing it. It happened for us Americans at night.
On a sidenote, I’m learning that my instincts on dating these things is often pretty wrong. For example, I originally thought this was from 2001. I thought I was in college, I thought I had ‘matured’ (musically) a bit, and then I thought, well wait, it’s still early sounding, maybe it was 2000. Looking at the txt file I wrote for the song, it was friggin August of 99. I was still 17.
Funfact: one of the machines in this song is named ‘pickles’.
This was “a Binary Distorsion Inc. / Alternative Rumblingz release”…originally at http://surf.to/bdi. I miss those guys.
