This track was, for the most part, created in a very short time frame art project / experiment / live experience / promotion done at The Business in Anacortes.
For this project, I came into The Business (a record store) early in the afternoon armed with nothing but a turntable and an empty sampler. The idea was to create an entire set of songs from nothing but the vinyl available in the record store, on the same day as the show (thanks Nick for helping me live out a dream). I grabbed anything that looked interesting … some BTO, some aerobics training, some Burl Ives (a necessary Anacortes original), some proto-industrial, and most notably for this composition, some Olivia Newton-John.
The first couple hours were spent sampling and chopping, with a couple hiccups due to poorly planned memory usage – resampling in an mPC2kxl takes an excruciatingly long time…I’m talking 20 minutes to resample a 30 second sample. I learned this the hard way on this day when I had nothing but short time to work with.
This piece definitely came together the easiest, and continued to be refined throughout the next few months, culminating in a couple recording sessions in the garage to tape (see Reverb City). I’ve chosen this markedly dissimilar track to close the album out on a high note.
I will continue to post the album in reverse order.
Thank you.
MPC straight to 1/4″ reels via Mackie mixer and LXP-1 on send.
Chuck originally called this one “Love is the opening door”.

My hope is that you put this on a cd somewhere in the middle where you’ve got about a minute and a half to fill. With the stars aligned, and yer mind correct, it should sound as if these Bulgarian choirs sing a solemn song solely for you.
This one seems appropriate today.

Title: El Paso

Thursdays are now collaboration Thursdays.
This comes from a session with my friends in an early incarnation of the band Gobi. Major props to Phil and Dillon…they really put on a show like no other. My most recent Gobification involved a great show, and then hearing said show ringing off of all the buildings downtown as I biked home to get like 2 hours sleep before my radio show. They also apparently had the cops called, which is actually a rarity at Revs, so PROPS GUYS! Serious jamming that evening.
I made this beat with my laptop sitting on a dresser in a 99% empty apartment. I’ve never seen so many egg crates + mattresses in a bathtub. They had that bathroom converted to one of the deadest vocal booths I’ve ever heard…again props. Phil spit some improv lyrics over this beat, but the vox + beat never really got mixed together. It was all pretty live anyway, so count it towards a bad ass good time instead of a shiny document of said good time. This beat was produced by Noggin for (early) Gobi.
Also, it should be noted that this track didn’t actually have a name (‘philbur’ in the file, i believe), but I definitely remember Phil saying El Paso in the spits.

This one manifested as the outro to the third installment of my Work In Progress mixes, toward the end of April 2005. I was developing a style I call noise sculpting, and while this one only scratches the surface, it worked as a practice in restraint. This is a good one to play when you’ve got the family all together, like around a campfire, or on roadtrips.
I did not record the source material, and if you know where it came from, please let me know.
Happy birfday America.

Here’s a bonus drop for anyone who requested Orion last week.
More work here with the revered and respected Gabriel Winter. If I remember correct, Gabe had this sample + some very loose melodies programmed, and then I got it and added drums + strings. Unfortunately, this song never was finished, and I think might have been the last track we collaborated on (feel free to correct me if you know better).
edit: player fixed.
