Another one off the recently bounced Fall Tape. This path was formed by placing one stone at a time.
EPS sampling Logic sounds, sequenced via mpc, sequence recorded to logic, re-sequenced back to eps, tracked to logic in whole song and chunk sections (for looping), sent to cassette tape, bounced back to pc, cut up / mastered briefly mostly to raise cassette output, disseminated on the trackaday faces.
I love the interplay of different machines from different time periods because it brings up interesting techniques that might not have been explored otherwise. Ever notice a hardware samplist’s tendency to raise both notes of a interval equally? That’s the machine talking as much as the musician (this led to a lot of ‘jazzy’ hip hop and electro-lounge).
TX on the bass.

Soaring, melodic, sophomoric, string-breaks. This is all Jeskola Buzz from when I was just starting out with this more electronic production. I felt real classy I after I spit this one out at 16. At 9 minutes long, this was an early epic.
Diggin on the primi-fun and the newfound favorite (at the time), Whitenoise’s Delta. Glide function on a synthesizer WOW.

One of my most beloved creations…a true love song to the most badass, speaker destroying, analog/digital hybrid 1980s drum machine house master in your face (did I say drum machine) that has ever existed…the Roland TR-909.
Sure the 808 is trendy as all hell right now (your welcome America, the Dirty Third had plenty of those samples to go around), the 909 is the cream of crop, to me.
While the 808 is purely analog, kind of spaceship sounding, the 909 refined this sound, turned it up, compressed it, kept it analog, and brought in some digital crispness to just completely rip through a mix and/or your mids.
Seriously, my DJ mentor Edgar, in telling a tidbit from his incredible dj-lore, once explained to me that Carl Cox brought a 909 with him to a gig they threw, and literally, blew out all the mid range speakers in the venue.
Now, I’ve heard of subs blowing (I’ve blown my own), I never would have believed it (til I did it), but I’ve seen tweeters blown, but to blow the MIDS?! The snare drum on this piece is a straight killer.
Anyway, early on in my love affair with this device, I got hold of a vocoder plugin for Buzz, and just put down to bits what I was feeling inside.
The sounds this box makes never cease to floor me.

PS. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A REAL LIVE 909. If you would like to send a TR-909 to me, hit that contact button up above and you will have made a lifelong friend – I’ll even take you out for beer to make it a little more awesome.

pps. YES I did my radio show today, but I can’t let 909 pass unacknowledged, so I will upload the radio show, as usual, only tomorrow, instead of today.

Happy 09/09.

ReBirth made pure acid. Ten friggin minutes of tweakiness…this was my first real foray into the depths of the genre. You might recognise it from this post, which is actually the live/remix version of this original long-runner.
This one is relevant because in my current job writing code for iPad, I’ve rebirthed my interest in ReBirth…which has itself been rebirthed on iOS, and I imagine fits nicely into the iPad form factor.
Also, don’t forget, ReBirth is free software now (still one of the best 303 emulations I’ve heard).

I remember doing this one just out of love for 909’s and Rhodes pianos. I cannot recall exactly if I had this connected to some sort of knob box (all I had at the time were ones I had made), or if I just did it old school style and recorded each parameter tweak during each run through of the song.
Think I passed this one out quite a bit though on mix tapes, etc.

Last September I finally built my x0xb0x. That is a bass-synthesizer, clone of the infamous Roland TB-303. It’s amazing how, for 15 years I have been trying to emulate this one particular sound, and now, after about two weeks huddled over a circuit board and huffing solder fumes, all I have to do is plug this machine in.
A C I D.
This was recorded literally seconds after I turned the machine on for the first time.
Uploading today because I just opened her up to do a bit of surgery…the USB section (yes acid has been brought to the 21st century) is not working, and I thought/was hoping/am hoping it was just a bad resonator not letting the FTDI usb chip run properly…we’ll see…
Muchas gracias to the kind soul from Germany sending me a resonator so I could try it out.
Edit after the fact: WTF is my problem posting a 303 track on 302!? HAPPY 303 everyone. Request Thursday still stands…

Here’s some bubblegum techno-pop from 1997.
This was the first track I ever finished and released using what would be become my main sound production tool, Jeskola Buzz. Seems appropriate to use a ‘first’ for this, the first post of this daunting endeavor. A little hesitant because it’s so different from most of my other stuff, but twice this week people have brought this track up and said they liked it, so just giving the people what they want.

This track was also my first international release, as it was released on a New Zealand comp ‘Self Unbound’ shortly after I shared it.

It’s crazy when I think about making this track, because I was just so new to producing using a computer, and these new concepts of ‘patterns’ and ‘loops’ completely blew my mind. I think this track actually grew entirely out of my amazement with another friend who had made a little beat that was based on a two-pattern (8 beats) loop…thanks for the inspiration Cliff.
Also, this track ignited my love affair with my favorite synth of all time, Geonik’s PrimiFun.
