Probably the first piece I did to create backing tracks for Karl’s “96” record. I loved those crunchy drums, and took it upon myself to see if I could turn his voice into a bit of an electronic instrument via the power of digital sampling in the mpc.
I’ll never forget the first moments I was working on that vocal, Elena came over with Murphy and he just started singing along with Karl’s endless tone.
MURPH!!!

Ambient track produced from a couple George Strait samples on the EPS. Damn, that is a deep keyboard. Not even software samplers come close to what it could do with built in functionality.
Recorded to cassette tape in the early summer of ’10 in Anacortes, WA.
Thanks again, Karl.

Straight from the MS2000 faceplate to tape one evening in the red house. This ambient track is dedicated to the struggle inside all of us.

This is an homage track to the Pictures of Clouds releases, technically by Noggin. Shortly after the POC sessions, I still had the studio set up very POC-ish and so I got to work making some new tracks. This one came out of running the mpc into the mixer with a feedback channel set to my secret weapon.
This song has even been played live a couple times, once at the very mellow, very rainy DOS proto-ambient show, and once more shortly thereafter at Ike’s in Wimberley.
Shout out to Robby Neighbor.

Reeeeallly close to wrapping up the Pictures of Clouds release, but, as is the nature of the beast, it’s a bit of a nebulous thing. More tracks bearing the moniker are still to come, but for the most part, the set is complete and presentable.
This is the intro track that set the stage for what was to come, and also make us feel good about hitting the stop button on the tape player. You know, something is only finished when you deem it so, and it’s good to do that ever so often.

One that fits the original ‘ambient’ vibe of the POC release a little closer.
This is basically track 3 off the album, not counting the intro track. We are just riding a vibe here, sequencer off, fx routed and fedback on each other, Elena chilling under the window.
Part of the magic of this short track is how it opens up for track 7, so you’ll have to burn this whole album to experience that proper-like.

This is one of the hits off the Pictures of Clouds release. All props to The Young Master on keys here, for one of the best, recorded, impromptu jams of my life.

Another track from the well received Noggin set at the 2nd Stafford Skullf*cker extravaganza. I had just written this song a short while before this, debuted it at the Department of Safety on 30 October, then redid it with a bit of sync lead for the Stafford show.
Notice the crunchiness – this entire set was mixed and processed through a Yamaha DMP-7. It’s one of the first digital mixers, and it’s got a really unique sound as it takes analog input, converts it all to digital, does all processing digitally inside the machine, then does another DA conversion on output to provide regular old analog outs.
This song to me is the sound of all the house music that wants to exist on a rainy Washington island finding refuge in one, strangely slanted room.

Beatjuggling during a Pizza Party session.
The juggling is incredibly sloppy at the beginning but that’s kind of the point…Pizza Party is more about that spur of the moment gamespit, not calculated practice.
It’s our good buddy Herb Alpert and the TJB on the decks.

In honor of my newly resurrected Nintendo, here’s an early 8-bit cover of this Black Sabbath classic that I recorded in the Red House basement one cold, Washington winter day.

I would like to dedicate this one to Baxter and her expanding family, notably the newest member.

This is the sound coming off the actual NES itself (2 channels).
About the resurrected Nintendo – it just started going to a solid white screen on turn on, so I went the most popular route and bought a new 72-pin connector. That didn’t help, so I started seeking out a new NES. The one I ended up finding was in pretty bad cosmetic shape, so I yanked the circuit board out of it, and stuck it in the nicest case I had…which also already had the mods for 1/4″ out.
All this for a show I’ve got coming up on Friday 02 September for Atarimatt’s record release party – this is going to be an insanely rad show.
