Title: Buttjazz Theme
Artist: Jon + Noggin
Album: Beast Mountain Buttjazz Halloween Tape
Date: 2009

Jon and I laid this down in his apartment using two mics. It’s all improv, and actually the first time we had hung out together in a while when we recorded this. What can I say the air was alive. This is to be included on the yet forthcoming Halloween tape.

This one falls into the forgotten tracks territory. When I started getting into glitch, I just had to experiment as much as I could. This one has your definite glitch backdrop, with a hint of a pretty menacing 303 and some boom bap beats. Also, FFT fx courtesy Drink.

File this buzz beat under “why the hell did I name it this?”. It’s not the beat that would eventually become the backbeat for my Gin and Juice reshuffle, though I imagine it’s not too far off to assume it grew from that, then totally transformed along the way. I can tell yall that the beat sounds like it’s a sample from, or shares some samples with, the beat from the Noggin remix of Ilya’s “Formation”.
Also pretty sure this one is heavy on the vsts.
Buzz, duh.

Comes from the honeymoon right when I got Reason for the first time and had an actual, classic synthesizer to work with. However, that honeymoon didn’t last…sure the hardware emulation was novel for a while, but the clunkiness of the patching vs how easy it was to go totally crazy with Buzz, it didn’t take too long for me to get completely over reason. Great software, just not for me.
This was also when Rik had started getting me interested in psy-trance, and I really started to love the hyper-electronic cutting sounds prevalent in the genre.
Out comes this little gem of some sample-and-hold synth filter tweakage.

Running full speed ahead with some presets from the then-just-released FM7. I had no idea how to use this thing, but thought this sounded great.
The file either corrupted or I just sort of, moved on, but this never really got too much further. I actually think I pushed out a good 3 minute track from this, but cannot locate it.
Great sound for an fm synth…makes me wonder if I could get the tx81z to sound like this?!
This is all buzz with FM7 running in a vst loader.

Another high mark in my mind comes from this somewhat psychedelic trance excursion with Rikard. It’s all Buzz again, but Rik had really been kicking it up a notch lately with how clean and professional his buzz tracks were sounding. I remember this one going back and forth quite a few times in quite a short amount of time.

One of my favorite tracks to have under my belt, here’s track 2 off the divergent ai ep. Keepin it simple with that mda epiano (love this one) rubbing the heels of some distraught and noisy 808. works well with headphones (all this buzz stuff does…imagine that).

This track really kicked off my trip-hop obsession in a big way. For this track, and a whole slew of tracks after it, I really wanted that hard hitting, smeared drum sound. Also really got into incorporating outside elements into tracks at this point…some of the first guitar-infused Buzz-ness right here.
Chew a bit on this one folks, it’s easy to swallow.
Unrelated note, really looking forward to Noel Gallagher’s solo album in October.

Glitch + psuedo-prog-synth-bubblings.
This one is all Buzz, again, trying to get just a crisp sound out of it. Very sketch on the date of this… +/- two years.
edit: player is fixed.

The Red House Studio was like an orphanage, we left so many tracks to fend for themselves in the wild.
This is a demo I worked out solely on the ESQ-1 to a) prove that I could do it and b) get that 80’s teen movie vibe. Mix that with ultra-smooth r&b vibe and now yer getting into stirring territory.
Pizza Party vocalist – let’s get some vox, alright?!
