Running full speed ahead with some presets from the then-just-released FM7. I had no idea how to use this thing, but thought this sounded great.
The file either corrupted or I just sort of, moved on, but this never really got too much further. I actually think I pushed out a good 3 minute track from this, but cannot locate it.
Great sound for an fm synth…makes me wonder if I could get the tx81z to sound like this?!
This is all buzz with FM7 running in a vst loader.

After too much delay, I got around to modding a Nintendo (graciously donated to science by DJ Dag-Nab-It) to output two independent channels of audio. The original NES is mono (one cable), and this mod has been described as a ‘stereo’ mod. What’s actually going on is a little bit cooler.
The NES can only make five sounds, 2 square wave tones, a triangle wave, a noise channel, and a very lo-fi sampler. From the chip inside the game system, the two square waves come off one pin, and the rest of the sounds off the next pin. That means you can hack in a couple jacks, run one channel (square waves) into one channel of a mixer, and run the rest into another…giving you hands on control of each track independently.
If you’ve ever heard me talk about mixers before, you might know that the mixer is probably my favorite instrument to play. So having such immediate, analog control over such raw, mathematical signal feels really good. This is the first time I fired up MIDINES with the MPC sequencer.
The second half of this track is a remix / rejiggle of Smile Transylvania’s excellent re-jAm / repurpose of a track from the Super Nintendo game Super Metroid.
We even made a video of what midines synthesises to the incoming midi messages.

Remix of my boy Ilya’s sound-design experiment “Doppler Beats”, which maybe I can encourage him to explain in detail in the comments?
He sent me this pretty awesome recording of some sounds, and I thought, these should be turned into a jam. I was also experimenting a lot with the ‘hardware’ sampler in Reason, so I used it as an excuse to get down and dirty like I hadna before. As such, buzz is pretty absent from this recording.

Glitch! No, really. Samples of mp3s glitching out, trying to seek, garbling / warbling the sound, reading in non-audio files as audio, turning those into drums. It’s all here.
Buzz.

This track really kicked off my trip-hop obsession in a big way. For this track, and a whole slew of tracks after it, I really wanted that hard hitting, smeared drum sound. Also really got into incorporating outside elements into tracks at this point…some of the first guitar-infused Buzz-ness right here.
Chew a bit on this one folks, it’s easy to swallow.
Unrelated note, really looking forward to Noel Gallagher’s solo album in October.

Originally did this for my boy Adnan’s birfday, wanting my boy Turner to record some talk-box vox like we had done together so many times on his webcast. Well he never came through, so for his birthday, he gets a regift.

A 13-bit Ensoniq EPS sampler and a Jobim record make up the bulk of this ambient tune. Drums sampled from an R&B remix 12, whose artist I will not mention for fear of blind RIAA lawsuits trying to make a point about sampling.
This one comes to show yall a bit of a recent glimpse into my musical life. I recently was asked to participate in the Friendship Trail…a walk around Anacortes early in the morning during the Saturday of the final What The Heck Fest / Shipwreck day. For this piece, I had 4 copies of the tracks, left track, right track, both tracks, and a hard-limited mixed track, all playing at slightly varying times on 4 portable recorders taped to an acoustic guitar (thanks Rocky). Starting the recorders at different times kind of allowed the sound to move around the body of the guitar, and really started to sound wicked once the drums kicked in. Coupled with some awesome hardware switches for timestretch ranging from -60% to -75%, I was really able to adapt this song to a live environment….the snares sounded especially glitchtastic with that gnarly timestretch kicking.
Karl had me set up to play under a small ivy-covered archway off of 4th street. I misinterpreted the location, and arrived at what I thought was the location about an hour and a half early, to try and affix these things to the guitar (in the rain), and also record some vocal harmony to sing with on another track. Well, Karl shows up shortly thereafter and starts to do some prep of his own. Slowly but surely, the entire crowd starts showing up. What I had failed to realise was, I was NOT at the archway where I was to play. I got messed up because, the trail was supposed to start at the W.T. Preston, a museum of a paddle boat, but the night before, I had come across a smaller, steel-frame model of the same boat, with the nameplate “W.T. Preston” on it, and I incorrectly figured THAT was the starting point.
Blau eventually set me straight, and after the crowd walked on to the next performance, I stayed behind, under the bow of the boat, and finished my vocal harmonies. Eventually, I was able to find my archway and prepare.
This is the piece I had playing as the crowd arrived. Timing worked out great, because I was able to shave this 6+ minutes song into more like 2 by starting it later and starting it earlier than the crowd got there. When the drums hit, I knew things were ok.
Thanks to Rocky for the guitar, thanks to Karl for the invitation, and thanks to all those at Heck fest who got up at 9 in the morning to walk around in the rain and listen to some music in strange, new places.

Whilst working on a film project in college, our group needed some basic bed music, not too loud, not too quiet, to use underneath a PSA we were creating for the food bank. A short time with the midi-keyboard and reason and our problems were solved. I’ll never forget how ‘easy’ I felt it was using a real keyboard (I’m a programmer/pad banger, never really record with a piano-style keyboard).

An amazingly talented good friend of mine named Jordan recorded this and sent it to me either while I was in Austin or while I was in limbo / homeless between Austin and California. On a whim, I asked him to send the tracks and let me try to add a piano, which I did using my piano in Bryan (slightly in a honky tonk tuning, no?). I do not consider myself a piano player, but I do consider myself a musician and I will play whatever you throw at me. Having said that, don’t throw pianos at me right now. Put this one together by ear, then grabbed the only mic I had (thanks again Thoams) and recorded this while my dad ate beans in the kitchen and my mom scoured the internet for travel deals (she was really good at that). If you listen close enough, my cat, The Baron Archimedes Von Resonator Al-Stimpson de Chenonceau even has a part in this.
Thank you Jordan for being such an inspiration.
ps. there is another version of this somewhere that has a crazy glitched out guitar solo I’ll try to find and upload later.

Title: I Swear to you my friend it will be alright
Artist: Noggin
Album: As Yet Unknown

This one comes up today because it has vocals from my own dad, El Medico / Dirty Knife. So happy Father’s day. He will probably dislike this song because he is not a fan of “rap music”. Well, I’m sorry pops, but if you can label anything a bit more adventurous than the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as “rap music”, then yea, we’ve got a long way to go.
I wrote this song for a very good friend of mine who was just having a bit of an existential crisis. I can’t remember the details but it’s likely because the details don’t matter, it was the overall feeling I was concerned with at the time, and I hope that my feeble attempt to lend a hand through resonances is remembered for nothing more than the crux feeling it was expressing. For as terrible as the internet can be, the ability to collaborate musically with each other, he in San Marcos, me in Praha, was really a blessing.
Here’s to new fathers.
